Leadership starts at home
Greg Taylor
At Michael Jackson’s memorial, his daughter, Paris Jackson, held the world’s attention when she said, “Ever since I was born, Daddy was the best father you could ever imagine . . . and I just want to say that I love him, so much.”
My wife, Jill, said this was the most important moment in the memorial–the one in which we learn from MJ’s own child the value of his life. Superlatives about career or impact on the world pale in comparison to the impact a person has on his or her own children.
Jill also pointed to an article by Jason Whitlock about a man we have long followed and cheered in our football-fan family: former Tennessee Titans quarterback Steve McNair, who was recently killed.
More news is coming out that he took vacations with the twenty-year-old girlfriend who was also found dead by his side. He took those trips and had this affair and left his wife and four children in the dust. We have lost McNair and we have lost our respect for him.
Whitlock pointed out that leadership starts at home. McNair failed the test.
We certainly don’t know much about the home life of Michael Jackson and his children, and some suspect some weirdness, but MJ apparently passed the leadership test at home, as Paris’s words witness.

Come Sunday, July 12 when we’ll experience together the power of Christ washing the feet of his disciples in his last day before he went to the cross. This is the setting of the “I AM” saying, I am “Teacher and Lord.”
